Species snowdrops

The genus Galanthus consists of 20 to 30 different species of bulbs growing through Europe and into Asia Minor and the Caucasus.

Four of these species (elwesii, nivalis, plicatus and gracilis) have become widespread in gardens and are the parents of the vast majority of hybrids that have arisen in cultivation.

The remaining species are much less common and show little or no variation in cultivation. Nonetheless, they are a fascinating group of plants and add much interest and variation to a collection. Some, such as ikariae and platyphyllus, have acquired a considerable mystique, are undoubted aristocrats of the genus and are highly sought after.
