Early flowering snowdrops

Early flowering snowdrops

It might at first glance seem strange to talk of early flowering in Snowdrops, when it their early flowering in a bleak late winter landscape that makes them so prominent and attractive.

However, the growing season for snowdrops commences in September with new root development and ends in May/ June when the leaves die back. Like crocuses, different snowdrops flower at different stages within their annual cycle and snowdrops can be found in flower from late September until late May.

By early flowering we mean snowdrops which flower noticeably earlier than the normal nivalis; which flowers in February with us. Although absolute dates will vary with location and latitude, the sequence will remain unchanged: Snowdrops that are early with us will be early with you.
