Sir Herbert Maxwell is probably a nivalis x plicatus hybrid and arose on the Wigtownshire property of the person whose name it now bears. As was the norm in those days, bulbs were sent to E A Bowles for comment and identification. As was probably also the norm, they received the name of the sender when further onpassed by Bowles.
