For nearly a century, yellow variants of Galanthus nivalis have been known to occur with some frequency in snowdrop populations in Northumberland. They have long been the subject of pilgrimage and collection and, more recently, of careful research.
Numerous souvenirs and samples have been collected and, as a result, these plants have thus entered cultivation many times. Early collections were named lutescens and flavescens, although the plants to which the names were applied have become confused in the interim. Current convention names all these yellow Northumberland plants as nivalis Sandersii Group.
Primrose Warburg made many trips to study these plants, sometimes accompanied by Noel Pritchard. Accordingly, we grow numerous differnt acquisitions but the differences between them are slight and we call them all Sandersii Group.
