Platyphyllus

Galanthus platyphyllus grows high in the Caucasus mountains. It flowers as the winter snow melts and retreats; often as late as June.

In gardens it is always one of the last to appear and flower, often late May in Northern Scotland.

It is a very distinctive plant with broad leaves and inner petals without an apical notch. The bulbs are also unlike other snowdrops, being very long and tapering like a species Narcissus. Like many snow melt bulbs the flowers are often opening as they emerge from the ground.

For much of the 20th century, platyphyllus was out of bounds to western botanists and gardeners, growing behind the iron curtain. Perhaps as a result it has become very confused and is almost always incorrectly named. Plants offered as platyphyllus invariably turn out to be Galanthus woronowii.

We offer the true plant which came originally, and once only, from a commercial nursey.
