Atkinsii is a very distinctive large hybrid with large elongated flowers, difficult to describe but instantly recognisable. The Atkinsii type has probably arisen spontaneously several times and a number of very similar plants are in circulation.
Shortly after Atkinsii began to be distributed it became confused with and largely superseded by a similar plant with occasionally deformed petals. The imposter became known and accepted as Atkinsii, although E A Bowles was aware of the mistake.
The recent monograph on snowdrops untangled the confusion and named the imposter James Backhouse, as it could be shown that the plant had originated with him. It is an extremely easy-going plant, strong and robust enough to be used on a landscape scale in rough grass under trees. The mis-shapen petas have to be searched for and in no way detract from an excellent garden plant.
Our stock came many years ago (as Atkinsii) from a commercial supplier.
